Lifeguard / Swim Instructor Training

Lifeguards and swim instructors are key to the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) being able to offer public swimming times and lessons. As with many other local governments across Canada, the SCRD has experienced a shortage of qualified lifeguards and swim instructors which has impacted service delivery in the Region.

You can learn more about how to become a lifeguard or swim instructor below.

The SCRD offers training you need to become a qualified lifeguard.

Lifeguards monitor pools to prevent drowning or injuries and administer first aid if required. While at times challenging, lifeguarding is a very rewarding job – and could be perfect for those who love the water.

The path to becoming a lifeguard includes completing the following steps:

Step 1: Complete Bronze Star
Step 2:
Complete Bronze Medallion
Step 3: Complete Bronze Cross
Step 4: Complete Standard First Aid
Step 5: Complete National Lifeguarding Certification

If you are thinking about becoming a Lifeguard, we offer Steps 2 to 5 this winter.

Start in January 2025 and you could be a certified Lifeguard by March.

We offer the Swim Instructor Course in the summer.

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life – Learn to Swim program. If you have successfully completed Bronze Cross, you can take training to become an instructor. You do not need to be a Lifeguard in order to be a Swim Instructor.

Pre-requisites are:

  • 15 years of age by the last day of the course
  • Bronze Cross.
Candidates will learn about evaluation and techniques/approaches required for teaching. They will learn about long term and short term planning, class management and safety supervision. Teach experience requirement included within the course.
